ACSM supports evidence-based public policy that encourages healthy lifestyles and the safe enjoyment of sports and other physical activities.  In addition, ACSM's members serve as expert resources for federal, state and local policy makers, ensuring that decisions are founded on the latest research.

ACSM advocates on several different issues on the federal, state and local level.  It is through this advocacy that ACSM is able to affect positive change that results in healthy lifestyles.

Imagine the impact of having every member of the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as all 100 U.S. Senators hear from a constituent -- someone in his or her district or state -- who can provide informed guidance on matters relating to physical activity and exercise as a means to improving peoples’ health through the adoption of such healthy lifestyle interventions. This strategy, with a Key Contact in each of the 435 districts and in every state, can go a long way toward advancing the ACSM policy agenda.

State Advocacy

Opportunities to advocate range from local school boards and zoning panels to state legislatures.  These policy-makers are, in many cases, citizen lawmakers who practice diverse professions outside their statehouse duties.  While congressional and presidential politics draw much attention, the actions of state and local governments have more direct bearing on our lives and work.  For information on what is happening in your state, please click on this link.
